How the papal blessing works

The St. Benedict medal

One of the oldest Catholic sacramentals, worn for protection against evil. The letters are the initials of Latin prayers: on the cross, Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux (May the holy cross be my light); around the edge, Vade Retro Satana (Begone, Satan).

This 4.5-inch RED St. Benedict Crucifix is a powerful symbol of protection, faith, and Christ's victory over evil. Crafted in Italy and brought directly from Rome, it features rich red enamel inlay and a finely detailed silver-tone corpus of Christ.

At the center rests the Saint Benedict Medal—front and back—renowned for its spiritual defense and invoking God’s blessing and peace.

This crucifix was originally blessed by Pope Francis, it is now also blessed by Pope Leo XIV. Ideal for home altars, prayer corners, or as a meaningful Catholic gift, this crucifix invites the faithful into deeper prayer and divine protection.

The Saint Benedict Medal is a Catholic sacramental medal containing symbols and text related to the life of Saint Benedict of Nursia.
The medal is one of the oldest and most honored medals used by Catholics and due to the belief in its power against evil is also known as the "devil-chasing medal". As early as the 11th century, it may have initially had the form of Saint Benedict's cross, and was used by pope Leo IX.
The reverse side of the medal carries the Vade retro satana ("Step back, Satan") formula which has been used by Catholics to ward off evil since the 15th century. Sometimes carried as part of the rosary, it is also found individually.
In widespread use after its formal approval by pope Benedict XIV in the 18th century, the medal is used by Catholics to ward off spiritual and physical dangers, especially those related to evil, poison, and temptation.
