Collection: St. Benedict Pet Protection

Many Catholics entrust their animals to God through the St. Benedict medal, the same sacramental they keep at the door and wear themselves.

A small blessed medal on a collar is a quiet way of praying for a dog or cat that goes out into the world, and a reminder to give thanks for the companions God puts in our care.

This page shows only the small medals, light enough for a pet: sizes of 1/2, 3/4, 7/8 and 1 inch, in bronze tone, dual color finishes and colored enamel, plus a medal with a rose design. Several come in sets of two or four, handy for a household with more than one animal or for keeping a spare. Fasten the medal to the collar ring next to the name tag.

We bring these medals to the Papal audience in St. Peter's Square to be blessed by Pope Leo XIV, and each blessed medal ships from Rome with a holy card of the Papal blessing. For larger medals and the rest of the family, see the St. Benedict page.

Frequently asked questions

Can a St. Benedict medal be used for a pet?

Yes. The medal may be used to ask God's protection over people, homes and animals alike.

Which size suits a collar?

A 1/2 or 3/4 inch medal suits a cat or small dog; a 7/8 or 1 inch medal suits a medium or large dog.

Can I pray a blessing over my pet?

Yes. A short prayer asking God, through St. Benedict, to protect the animal is a good custom, especially when you first put on the medal. St. Francis of Assisi is also a beloved patron of animals.
