Overcome Anxiety : how a prayer to Saint Dymphna can help you defeat anxiety

The Power of Prayer on Work-Related Anxiety

There are a million things that may trigger your anxiety, but don't be alarmed: you never have to carry it alone, and prayer places it in the hands of the One who heals.
Work-related anxieties are common stressful situations that tend to arise due to work or due to your responsibilities at the workplace. Sadly, they are very common, and anyone who is fully-invested in their craft will experience it at some point. For some, work-related anxiety may linger for days, months, even years. For others, it hits once, then it tapers out gradually over time. There are many ways for anxiety to show itself, and they are not all alike.
Although it is never truly possible to pin down the concrete reasons behind anxiety, engaging in deep, meditative prayer can grant you some clarity and relaxation, and ultimately, make it easier for you to tackle the causes behind your anxieties. Here is the process...

Who Was Saint Dymphna?

Saint Dymphna lived in the 7th century. According to the tradition first written down in the 13th century, she was the daughter of a pagan Irish king and a Christian mother. After her mother died, her father wanted to marry her. Dymphna refused, fled across the sea with the elderly priest Saint Gerebernus and settled near Gheel (Geel) in Belgium. Her father found them there and put both of them to death. She was about fifteen years old.

Pilgrims with troubles of the mind began to come to her tomb at Gheel, and the town became known for welcoming them into its own homes and caring for them, a tradition of family care that continues today. That is why Catholics invoke Saint Dymphna as patroness of those who suffer from mental illness, nervous disorders and anxiety. Her feast day is 15 May. You can read the classic entry on her in the Catholic Encyclopedia.

Preparing Yourself for Prayer

The first step to undergoing any meditative phase is to prepare yourself for it. Since anxieties are psychological and emotional in nature, the best way to prepare for it is to calm your thoughts and your emotions, even for a moment.
Take a page from the verse of Matthew 6:6, which states: "when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen," and be guided by this advice. To prepare best for deep, meditative prayer, find a quiet and calm location, away from things that may remind you of your anxieties, and observe silence for a short while.
Like most meditative practices, make sure to sit on a flat, comfortable surface, rest your muscles, close your eyes, and breathe. It is very important to do some breathing exercises before you pray, to ensure that your mind and body are synced and relax.
Take as much time as you need when preparing for prayer. The preparation period for prayer is something you cannot rush. Although the preparation portion is the first step to deep, prayerful moments, it is vital and it should be taken seriously. This is one stage of the whole prayer process that can't be skipped, because doing so might make you unprepared for the more important and spiritually-challenging step: praying as deeply and as sincerely as you can muster.
While praying, sometimes it helps having something to focus with, so try holding in your hand a small cross, a medal or your rosary while praying.

Let These Bible Verses Guide You

One way to truly achieve that level of clarity is to find inspiration from the Bible. If you don't know how to phrase your prayer to the Lord, or if you want to work on a single thought before starting your prayer (for many people, this helps), here are some Bible verses on anxiety to serve as a guide.
"The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and loving kindness will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever." - Psalm 23:1-6
"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." - 2 Timothy 1:7
"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." - Isaiah 41:10
You may even incorporate these verses in your prayer.
Moving forward, you can dive into your prayer session by speaking with God, through prayer, like you would a friend, or by repeating a prayer template, like the one below.

Prayer for Anxiety, through the Intercession of Saint Dymphna

Good Saint Dymphna,
Great wonder-worker in every affliction of mind and body, I humbly implore your powerful intercession with Jesus through Mary, the Health of the Sick, in my present need.
(State your needs here)
Saint Dymphna, martyr of purity, patroness of those who suffer with nervous and mental afflictions, beloved child of Jesus and Mary, pray to Them for me and obtain my request.
Amen.

A Simple Novena to Saint Dymphna

A novena is nine days of prayer for one intention, after the nine days Mary and the apostles spent in prayer before Pentecost. Many people begin on 6 May so that the ninth day falls on her feast, 15 May, but you can begin on any day your heart is heavy. Here is a simple outline written for this article:

  1. Begin with the Sign of the Cross and a moment of silence.
  2. Read one of the Bible verses above slowly, and keep one phrase with you through the day.
  3. Pray the Prayer for Anxiety through the intercession of Saint Dymphna above, and name your intention.
  4. Pray one Our Father, one Hail Mary and one Glory Be.
  5. Close with: Saint Dymphna, pray for us. Mary, Health of the Sick, pray for us.

If you miss a day, simply continue the next. A novena is not a formula that forces an answer: it is nine days of handing to God what weighs on you, with a friend in heaven praying beside you.

Keep a Sign of Faith Close

The prayer to Saint Dymphna asks for her help "through Mary, the Health of the Sick", so it is natural to keep something of Our Lady near you when anxiety rises. A medal in your pocket or holy water by the door are sacramentals: they do not work by themselves, but they prepare us to receive grace and help us turn back to God in the moment (CCC 1670).

The Miraculous Medal carries a short prayer you can repeat whenever worry starts to grow: O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.

Blessing yourself with holy water recalls your baptism: you belong to God, and fear does not have the last word.

Seek Medical Help or Professional Therapy

Make it a habit to pray everyday at home, before work, and most importantly, after it, so you may assess the level of stress you've encountered at work with the Lord's presence in your prayer session. Aside from keeping a consistent relationship with God through prayer, you may also supplement your healing by seeking medical help or professional therapy.
God has blessed us with friends, family, and medical professionals who can help us traverse through the difficult journey of anxiety and depression. If you seek further healing, don't be afraid to seek the advice or assistance of a medical professional.

Prayer accompanies medical care; it does not replace it. The Catechism reminds us that "life and physical health are precious gifts entrusted to us by God" and that we must take reasonable care of them (CCC 2288). Seeing a doctor, a counselor or a therapist is part of that care, and so is keeping up the treatment you are given. Even at Gheel, the sick who came to Saint Dymphna were cared for as well as prayed for.

If you ever have thoughts of harming yourself, call your local emergency number or a crisis line now, and tell someone you trust.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Saint Dymphna and why do Catholics pray to her for anxiety?+

Saint Dymphna is a 7th century Irish virgin martyr venerated at Gheel in Belgium, and the patron saint of those who suffer from mental illness, nervous disorders and anxiety. Catholics turn to her in times of worry and emotional turmoil, asking her intercession for clarity, peace and spiritual healing, because for centuries her shrine at Gheel has been a place where people with troubles of the mind were welcomed and cared for. Her feast day is 15 May.

How do I prepare to pray for anxiety relief?+

Begin by finding a quiet, comfortable space away from distractions that remind you of your worries, then sit on a flat surface, close your eyes, and practice deep breathing exercises to calm your mind and body. This preparation period synchronizes your physical and emotional state, allowing you to enter a meditative prayer experience with focus and peace. Taking time for this preparation is essential and should never be rushed, as it creates the foundation for meaningful spiritual connection.

Can prayer really help with work-related anxiety?+

Yes, prayer can help, though not as a quick fix. Bringing your worries to God in quiet, honest prayer gives many people clarity and calm, and makes it easier to face the causes of work-related stress. It works best alongside rest, good habits and, when needed, professional care, and many Catholics find that a short daily prayer becomes an anchor during difficult seasons at work.

What Catholic items can help me with my anxiety prayer practice?+

A sacramental you can hold or see helps you return to prayer when anxiety rises: a Miraculous Medal, a rosary, or holy water blessed by Pope Leo XIV kept by your bed or door. These are not charms; they are signs that point you to God and prepare you to receive His grace. Catholically ships its sacred items from Rome with a Certificate of Authenticity.

How do I pray a novena to Saint Dymphna?+

Pray for nine days in a row for one intention: each day make the Sign of the Cross, read a Bible verse, pray the Prayer to Saint Dymphna, then one Our Father, one Hail Mary and one Glory Be. Many people begin on 6 May so the novena ends on her feast day, 15 May, but you can begin at any time.

Can I pray to Saint Dymphna instead of seeing a doctor?+

No. Prayer accompanies medical care; it does not replace it. The Catechism teaches that we must take reasonable care of our health (CCC 2288), so pray to Saint Dymphna and also see a doctor or therapist, and if you ever feel in danger, contact emergency services right away.
