Catholics have always turned to sacramentals for protection against evil: blessed objects that prepare us to receive grace and remind us to pray.

This page gathers the ones most closely tied to that spiritual battle, chosen and blessed in Rome.

St. Michael the Archangel stands at the heart of this page. In Scripture he leads the heavenly army that defends God's people, and he is the protector invoked in the prayer of Pope Leo XIII; his medals are here for everyday wear. Beside him are the 3-Way Pardon crucifix and St. Benedict crosses, long trusted against evil. The St. Benedict medal itself, with its prayer and its meaning, has its own St. Benedict Medal page.

For the home there is holy salt blessed by Pope Leo XIV, holy water in sealed bottles from St. Peter's Basilica, and the exorcised holy water, oil and salt set. In the traditional rite, salt and water are exorcised and blessed before use, then placed at doors and windows or sprinkled through the house with a prayer. For a devoted collector we also hold a stone from the cave of St. Michael on Monte Gargano. Items marked as blessed are taken to the Papal audience in Rome and ship with a holy card of the Papal blessing. Every St. Benedict piece is on the St. Benedict page.

Frequently asked questions

Do these sacramentals replace an exorcism?

No. A solemn exorcism is performed only by a priest with his bishop's permission. Sacramentals support prayer, confession and the sacraments; they do not work by themselves.

What is the exorcised holy water, oil and salt set?

It is a set of the three sacramentals used for blessing a home and for personal prayer, blessed in Rome. Use them with faith and a prayer, for example at the doors and windows of the house.

What is the St. Michael stone from Gargano?

It is a small stone from the cave sanctuary of St. Michael on Monte Gargano in southern Italy, kept for devotion. It is a stone from the holy place, not a bodily relic.

Who wrote the prayer to St. Michael?

Pope Leo XIII composed it in 1886 and asked that it be prayed after Low Mass. Many Catholics still pray it every day for protection against evil.
